Dentures are prosthetic devices that are both aesthetic and functional. They provide you will a healthy and youthful smile that you can be proud of. Dentures also provide you will the ability to better chew and digest foods. If you’re considering dentures, Dr. Schau will do a complete oral examination to ensure that you are a good candidate for dentures.
You can opt for immediate or conventional dentures. Immediate dentures have both an advantage and disadvantage. Immediate dentures are created prior to tooth removal. However, gums and bones shrink during the healing period, and immediate dentures often require more adjustments for a perfect fit. Immediate dentures are really only a temporary solution. Conventional dentures are made after the healing period and provide a much better fit. Typically, a conventional denture is ready for placement eight to 10 weeks after tooth removal.
On average, the complete denture process takes approximately three to five week and several appointments. A series of impressions and measurements are taken of the mouth. A model in the exact shape and position of the denture needs to be created. You’ll have the opportunity to try the model on several times and both you and Dr. Schau can assess fit, color and shape. Once you’re pleased with the model, a final denture will be cast.
