Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is characterized by abnormal pauses in breathing during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a couple minutes and may occur up to 30 times an hour. Individuals who experience this sleep disorder are seldom aware that they are having difficulty breathing even upon awakening. To truly diagnose sleep apnea, a sleep test known as a polysomnogram needs to be performed.

While there is a range of Sleep Disordered Breathing, all forms of sleep apnea are considered a disease and need to be taken seriously as they can be fatal. When sleep apnea is caused by a physical blockage of airflow it is known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea or OSA. While snoring is a common symptom of this sleep disorder, additional signs and symptoms associated with sleep apnea are:

  • Chronic Sleepiness
  • Heartburn
  • Morning Headaches
  • Depression
  • Impotence
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Heart Attack
  • Strokes

If you have been told you snore or awake gasping for air, please immediately contact Dr. Schau to begin diagnosis and testing. While weight loss and other lifesytle changes can have positive effects on sleep apnea, most patients will require more extensive intervention which typically includes a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device and/or an Oral Appliance Therapy which Dr. Schau will custom-design for you to wear during sleep to help eliminate the airflow obstruction. Dr. Schau takes into consideration many different factors before selecting the dental appliance that will best fit your needs. Call today to schedule a consultation.
