Advice from Dr. Schau

A person’s teeth can remain healthy throughout his or her entire life. While you would primarily maintain yours by using a soft toothbrush to brush your teeth two times per day, there are other strategies that help ensure tooth health such as flossing the gaps between teeth daily. Sources of fluoride also combat tooth decay, and one surprisingly common fluoride source is water provided straight from the tap; therefore, tap water should be drunk throughout the day.
While these tips – as well as regular check-ups with one’s local dentist – fully benefit persons of all ages, it is especially important for older persons to heed them because the nerves in each individual tooth shrink in size and sensitivity over the years. This will cause any potentially serious problems such as cavities to be less apparent as they form and therefore less likely to be diagnosed and treated in time.
